Faith or Technology?
And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, and saying, "Have mercy on us, Son of David!" 28 And after He had come into the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to Him, "Yes, Lord." 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, "Be it done to you according to your faith." And their eyes were opened. Matt 9:27-30
Faith is about believing the things that don’t exist. It is acting as if some things are that have not happened yet. It involves thinking on a bigger level. It means looking beyond the ordinary things of the day and what normally happens to what is possible. If you believe it and act then faith calls it into being and things happen by faith.
Those who believed that Jesus could heal them of disease first had the idea. They may have heard it from others who had been healed or stories that were told. They applied the stories to their own life and believed it could happen to them. Then they had to contact Jesus or send someone else to contact Jesus and let him know of their situation and that they believed he could heal them. They were asking for something beyond what they could possibly accomplish.
How did it really happen that a blind man was healed? The scientific approach may look at the construction of the cells or the DNA and genetic make up of the individual. By the time the man could see somehow the cells were different. Jesus statement is “Let it be done according to your faith.” So was it faith that healed or the change in the molecular structure of the eye?
Our world seems intent on the technology that it takes to change the structure of the body or disease that we might live better. They don’t approach things from faith but from science. They want to know the details of how cells change. If we are not careful we can be caught up in fascination with the scientific and miss the heavenly importance.
Ordinary people were able to come to Jesus and change their life. Some came because of disease or handicap. Some came because of sin and guilt which had its own destructive power in their lives. Some came because of curiosity. For those who came believing Jesus could do something for them, he could. They brought the problem to Jesus not the answer. When people brought the answer of, “God you could do this and that and it would make my life better,” he didn’t always do it. It was when they brought the problem and claimed not to know how but believed, he could make things better.
How can we live and find faith in the chores of an ordinary life? It is not in having the latest technology and understanding the technical diagram of every machine in the house. It is when we believe Jesus can do something bigger than where we are. Don’t try to imagine how. It is when we see there is something more to life than just ordinary existence. His probing question is really to us all, “Do you believe I am able to do this?”
